Building a digital tool to improve the quality of childcare services

Acuarela is an ambitious project that aims to transform the way that children are cared for in the US by an extensive method of design thinking and strategic design that will cover every area of childcare and shape the experience that every daycare provider has both managing the daycare and taking care of the kids.

The Goal

Acuarela was created as an app meant to provide support and access to relevant information for childcare providers in the US. I came to the project as the UX/UI designer to structure, design and test the app along its development with the goal of compiling all the resources needed to be able to manage a business on a day-to-day basis ensuring that the children would get the best care they could.

The Pain points

We recognized that childcare providers have to deal with many things at the same time that get in the way of the foundational service they provide. Our user testimonials showed that they struggled with administrative tasks, taxes, legal procedures, and many more things while taking care of children that demanded constant attention. We focused our efforts on reducing as much friction as possible for all these tasks by creating a digital environment where the required information and processes were automated by our app.

Designing from scratch

I followed a disciplined process of wireframing and testing through iterations that resulted in a functional interface before even starting to design the final product. Once I got to that point, I took the visual identity that the team had created and translated it into the language that we used across the app, with a colorful, playful design that helped establish clear hierarchies and guided the user through the tool while capturing the essence of childhood and the joyous world that the users want to provide for the children.

The Success

Acuarela quickly became the central tool to all the services provided by BCCT. Through it, users could interact with other services like their courses or the additional tools that complemented Acuarela’s functions. Designing and conceptualizing Acuarela was an enriching experience where I got to own a project, be more propositive and push the design and the functionality forward by my own initiative.
